In June of this year(2016) my Mother was admitted to Hospital after a fall at her home, resulting in a Fracture Shaft of Femur, . It was discovered whilst undergoing treatment for this Injury(Thomas Splint) that she had developed Acute Cholangitis, . believed to have resulted from a blockage in her Bile Duct(? Gallstone). However, apart from Fever (raised white blood count) She showed no signs of Pain, Jaundice. & appeared relatively stable, .
In the January of that year whilst an inpatient suffering from Pneumonia, my Mum had blood tests that showed a raised Liver Enzyme, . A CT Liver Scan revealed narrowing in the Bile Duct with evidence of Gallstone/Mass. It was decided at that time to send for her as an outpatient to undergo an ERCP, . She declined the appointment twice, stating that she did not want any more procedures, as she felt any interventions were to traumatic for her, She was not in the best of health & at 90 years she was happy to just be allowed to live her life out in peace, . She was still enjoying her daily living in her own home with care 4 times daily. ,
Back to June 2016, her latest Hospital stay with the Fracture, . The Orthopedic Surgeon referred Mum to a Surgical Colleague, who wanted to pursue the ERCP. , my Mum at first refused to consent, but after hearing, if she did not have this procedure, she could not go home, she agreed & signed the consent, . we her family felt she had been Coerced into making this choice, . Yet after relaying our concerns to the head nurse, We where told mum had consented & had full faculty..
Mum went ahead & had the ERCP, We her family found out later the procedure was very difficult & due to the fracture could not be carried out as well as it should have been, . No Stone was located, so Stents where inserted to help drain the Bile. ,
once mum was back on the Ward her condition began to deteriorate, within 48 hours Our lovely Sweet Mum took her last breath surrounded by each member of her heartbroken family. , The Inquest had recorded accidental death but we her family feel different.
