"Transport between hospitals"

About: Amersham Hospital / General surgery Wycombe Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as a friend),

The original case was someone went to Wycombe Hospital with acute appendicitis. The A&E was closed and he had to go to Amersham.

He and his wife have recently been granted asylum and have no money whatsoever at this point in time. He was operated on at midnight and she was unable to stay in the hospital and had to get and pay for a bus back to Wycombe in the early hours. Whilst everyone in thankful for and glad about the operation itself, it appears that no one has given a thought to inter hospital transport arrangements and have made an assumption that all patients can afford taxis to and fro.

Dear Dingle Dell

I was very sorry to read of your friend's experience recently when trying to access treatment for acute appendicitis. I can understand how distressing and worrying this must have been for the patient their spouse, and you as their friend. I hope the patient has received appropriate treatment and is on their way to a speedy recovery.

I can understand completely your concerns regarding transport availability between hospitals. Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust appreciates that feedback from patients, relatives and visitors is invaluable in helping us shape how we work in the future. We would be grateful if you could spare the time to help us understand more about your friend's experience by contacting our dedicated Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 01296 316042 or email PALS@buckshealthcare.nhs.uk

.Thank you for responding.

I have given quite a lot of information already and should like you to be more specific as to what information you are looking for since this would save time. If you can do this I shall willingly supply the information you require.

From my standpoint I should like to know

- bearing in mind that the patient suffering from acute appendicitis, why could you not provide transport that would have caused him the minimum of pain ( ie an ambulance)

- why was the patient's wife not allowed to sit overnight in the hospital and why did she have to wait for an hour after being told this to wait for a bus in the early hours to take her back to Wycombe ( for which she had to pay and having only recently been granted leave to remain and existing on a shoestring was she made to pay for her transport?

- why have the assurances made prior to switching the A and E to Stoke Mandevile regarding transport in cases such as the above not been honoured?
