"Poor mental health care"

About: Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - Queen's Medical Centre Campus / Accident and emergency Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust / Adult Mental Health Services - Community (County)

(as the patient),

Presented to the emergency department, QMC, after having problems with the community mental health services for months, feeling very suicidal and having had self harmed. Alice, the streaming nurse was patient and understanding.

However, when I asked for pain relief from other staff due to the self harm I was denied on numerous occasions. The department of psychological medicine did a very brief assessment and did not feel that I was able to express my concerns.

Also, important information about my presentation (that I had self harmed) was not passed on to the DPM team meaning that I did not feel listened to.

I am also an employee of NUH and it made it incredibly awkward to be sat, so clearly distressed, whilst coworkers and colleagues walked past.

Overall, a very disappointing and upsetting experience.

Dear JenJen

I am very sorry that you have not received the help that you needed on this occasion. We acknowledge that on some occasions we do not get things right and are keen to find ways of looking at what happened and improving the service we offer. In addition we are always keen to hear feedback from people who have used our services in the past.

Some of the areas you raised are out of our control but I am able to comment on the following:

- In all cases we would wish to offer a full psychosocial assessment that explores people’s areas of concern and seek to agree a plan of care

- We endeavour to work closely with NUH and have shared access to their information systems, so we believe that all available information is passed to us when NUH make a referral to our team

Unfortunately arrangements for the seating areas in the Emergency Department are out of our control but we are happy to raise issues that have been raised with colleagues form NUH.

I would be very happy to arrange to meet with you, or discuss by telephone if you would prefer, to look in more detail at what happened in your case and try to find ways of improving our service for the future.
