"My mother is at present being ..."

About: Stepping Hill Hospital

(as a relative),

What I liked

My mother is at present being treated in Stepping Hill Hospital. She was taken to A & E with a very bad chest infection. After a bad breathing episode where her heart stopped, it was written on her notes Do Not Resuscitate. Nobody was asked to sign that this should happen and my mother recovered from the episode. The staff are refusing to remove this statement also refusing to over-ride with another statement which cancels out the Do not resuscitate statement. What right have these doctors to play God.

She was taken off medication which was important, and this has caused a lot of the problems she is experiencing now. I thought these places are supposed to save lives, not make them worse.

What could be improved

Her treatment.

After saving her life they have now decided that should it happen again they will just let her die.

Anything else?

Buck your ideas up.

I am sorry to hear about your mothers experience in A&E. There are procedures in place surrounding "Do Not Resuscitate" which all staff should be aware of. If you would like to discuss this matter further, and if you have not already done so, I would suggest you contact our Patient & Customer Services Department and they can discuss with you how you would like to proceed. You can telephone the department on 0161 419 5678 or email PCS@stockport.nhs.uk
