"Consent for surgery"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / General Surgery

(as the patient),

Attended day surgery unit for a fistuloscopy. Post surgery I was advised that the fistula could not be found but that a different condition (which I was unaware that I had) had been found and operated on. Having been unaware of the condition, I don't believe that I consented to this procedure and now require additional recuperation time off work.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear Pingu,

I am sorry you now find you have to reschedule things to fit around the new situation you find yourself in. This can be very inconvenient, particularly if you are self-employed or do not get paid for sick leave.

As I understand it, the consent form takes account of 'minor variations' from the plan because sometimes that is required. I also understand that if the deviation from the plan was major, a the procedure would have had to be rearranged.

Whilst I can't speak about your specific case, I am sure the 'pros' and 'cons' were taken into account by the 'operator' as they saw it. I hope this turns out to be more convenient than having to return for another procedure at a later date.

If you would like me to look into this further, please don't hesitate to contact me on 01563 826222 or eunice.goodwin@aapct.scot.nhs.uk.

I hope you have a speedy recovery and get back to work as soon as you desire.

Best wishes,

Eunice
