"My "experience" of help and support has been very mixed"

About: Bromley Healthcare / Podiatry NHS England London Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust / Older people's mental health

(as a carer),

My wife, who I am her Registered Carer, was diagnosed with dementia in Alzheimer's. Prior to that she was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in the 1980's, She is partially sighted with one "good" eye.

My "experience" of help and support has been very mixed. Mostly, sadly poor.

Dementia in Alzheimer's:

This, is her main problem. She was referred to The Memory Clinic.. She was allocated a Nurse at the Memory Clinic. She was prescribed two medications. These resulted in her becoming suffering hallucinations and being very drowsy. They simply did not work.

The Nurse referred my wife to the "Specialist" who, running late, re-prescribed one of the medications! ! As my wife did not take the medication she was discharged! No further help was available!

Doctor's Appointments:

We experienced problems in obtaining appointments at Stock Hill Medical Centre, Biggin Hill. The system was to telephone at 08. 00 hours and wait on the telephone to make an appointment. Twice after telephoning at 08. 00 hours, being disconnected, then finding you were 20+ in queue the reply was no appointments today,Go to A&E. , Farnborough if you need to see a Doctor today!” Written and verbal complaints were made to the Practice  to no satisfactory conclusion! Therefore, as I was registered at Norheads Lane Surgery, after my attending for a blood test, I transferred my wife to Norhead's Lane. I had experienced very good attention, when necessary, fortunately not often. Particular praise and thanks go to Practice Nurse, who was/is always, very, very helpful. The Receptionists also are always very polite and helpful. Thank goodness for Norheads Lane Surgery.

Podiatry Service:

This is my current problem! Due to my wife's Diabetic conditions, she qualified for Podiatry Care. This was provided at Orpington Hospital. The service was excellent. As you are aware Orpington's Podiatry Department closed and transfer to Beckenham Hospital was made. There the parking is impossible. If you are 10 minutes late, you were threatened with the loss of the appointment. The Podiatrist was very good. I explained the problem of travelling from Biggin Hill and more importantly parking at Beckenham Hospital. The Podiatrist was brilliant. She immediately made on the system an Appointment for Biggin Hill Clinic. This was made and again we saw the same  podiatrist. Brilliant!

Now, on our recent visit, despite all my wife's conditions, as detailed, we were told that she will be discharged as her feet do not meet the criteria! Age Concern will take over the service. For two days now I have been trying to reach the Podiatry Department of Age Concern. Answerphone messages, and when, you manage to speak to Reception it seems impossible to get through to Podiatry! A direct line was provided. -No reply after numerous efforts. A Carer, who I pay, employed by Age Concern, but engaged independently, for Sitting and Hygiene Services advises that Age Concern do not offer Podiatry or support with Washing etc!

Please advise!

Thank you Don Quixote for your posting. It is very clear from reading through this that you have had a difficult time supporting your wife.

I will respond to your points individually;

Your wife's assessment at The Memory Clinic was clearly not a supportive one to you. Bromley Healthcare do not run this service however you can raise your concerns to Oxleas who run this service. You can provide them with your feedback via an online form accessible via; http://oxleas.nhs.uk/compliments-and-complaints/

In relation to your GP practice, it sound like you have managed your feelings and moved your wife's care. Feedback to healthcare professionals is always welcomed and I am sure your Practice Nurse would like to hear your comments.

It sounds like your wife's podiatry appointment was initially difficult to access however it seems the receptionist supported you to access a clinic nearer your home and provided community of care.

In relation to your wife's discharge from the Bromley Healthcare podiatry service, we have been reviewing all cases on our caseloads. We have been discharging some patients who are stable from a podiatric point of view. If however, the condition of your wife's feet do deteriorate we would be very happy to you to contact us again. In the meantime please contact the Clip it booking administrator on 0208-315-1853 or 0208-315-1867. This last number I believe may have been the number you have been struggling to get through to. We have contacted Age UK who have advised us that their Information and Advice department has moved offices recently. This has caused difficulties with some of the phone lines. Age UK are working hard to resolve this short term issue.

Thank you for raising all the issues and I hope that I have managed to provide and answer to all your points.

Kind regards

Amanda

I'm sorry to hear that you have had such a difficult time and I hope you have found the previous response from Amanda Mayo helpful in accessing care for your wife's footcare as well as raising concerns direct with other services.

I am particularly sorry that you did not have a positive experience with the Memory Service which is run by Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust. I'm sorry that your wife did not react well to the medication she was prescribed, which I would expect to be part of a wider of package of information and support for the difficulties she was experiencing. I'm sorry that was not your experience.

I'm afraid that without knowing further information I cannot comment on the details of what happened but if you would like that to discuss further in person please contact me via 0208 301 9455. Your GP can help manage medication in dementia but if your wife has continuing difficulties that require specialist mental health care then you can ask your GP to re-refer you to the Memory Service, which is there to provide support primarily around diagnosis, or to the Community Mental Health Team, which provides support for complex and challenging mental health issues.

In addition to any input needed from health services, I would particularly recommend the Bromley Dementia Support Hub as providing helpful information and support for people with dementia in Bromley and their carers and support network. You can find further information here https://www.bromleydementiasupporthub.org.uk/ or you can contact them via 020 3328 0366.

Kind regards
