I was admitted to Glasgow Royal Infirmary Plastic Surgery Unit Ward 48 for breast reconstruction surgery following breast cancer treatment last year.
From my initial referral appointment, and several other appointments which followed, to my surgery and then post-operative recovery period, my care was second to none. All the staff in the outpatient department, from the receptionists, health care support workers, the man from medical illustrations, and all the nurses who dealt with me were lovely and their care very professional.
My surgeon Mr McGill listened to all my concerns, and addressed each and every issue I had professionally and did an amazing job surgically. The aneasthetist who was with me during my operation was lovely (Elizabeth Marshall) and again addressed all my concerns professionally and made sure I was written up for plenty painkillers and anti-sicness medicines - she even came back up to see me in the ward a few days later to check I was recovering well.
I was initially admitted to Ward 49, where the nurse Claire carried out numerous checks and put both myself and my husband at ease before I was ready to be moved through to Ward 48, where I would remain for my stay in hospital.
All the ward staff in Ward 48 were great. Nurses Carol and Paul on the night shift were just lovely, with Carol offering tissues and a shoulder to cry on when things got a bit much for me, and Paul to his professionalism when dealing with my hourly wound checks overnight.
My day nurse Taylor was lovely and very patient when it came to getting me up to sit in the chair which was a real struggle, but we got there. The health care support workers were lovely and the catering and cleaning staff were all very friendly and helpful too.
The charge nurse Mhairi-Clare kept things running smoothly and made sure all my care needs were met. All the recovery and anaesthetic staff were very professional (thank you to Lesley and Jinty) The breast care nurses and physios kept me right with specifics to my operation and recovery and took their time to explain things fully as required. All in all a great job was done by everyone involved with my care.
There is only thing I would like to point out as an area for potential improvement is prior notification of visiting times. Before my admission, I checked on the website and found open visiting times from 1: 30 to 8: 30, but found no mention of protected mealtimes. We had made arrangements for my daughter to be brought up to see me, but at 4: 45, my husband was made to leave, and my daughter had to wait outside until 6pm before she could get in. I appreciate the value of protected mealtimes, but the information could be made available in the pre-admission information which is sent out.
If this information had been made available beforehand, my visitors would have known to avoid these times, and we would have made alternative arrangements.
"All in all a great job was done by everyone involved with my care."
