"Rufford staff have made a difference"

About: St Andrew's Healthcare

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

I have been here for a number of years. I was in a different hospital before. I would have preferred to have been at St Andrew's Northampton as I would have been nearer my family. I used to kick off about 7 or 8 times a day because I was away from my family. I have a little sister who I love.

In my previous carer home I felt like I  didn't have choices, they were taking away my choices.

Staff here have made a difference. I thought I would never get off 2 to 1 and I would never get unescorted. Staff sitting down and talking to me helped me. They listened to me and talked to me about my problems. I went from 2 to 1 to 1 to 1 and then no obs which was so weird. I was expecting staff to be around and it was so weird not having staff following me around.

I went to my dad's wedding. I have actually gone from kicking off all the time to going to a wedding in my home town. I could have done a runner but the staff gave me the space and I didn't.

Psychology helped me. The staff really helped me. Now the staff are talking about a rehab ward in St Andrew's so hopefully I will move, I am not sure when.

I have stopped blaming everyone else and I realise it is not ok to act in a certain way. Mental health is important.

I am so happy that you have had a great experience and from the staff being experienced and getting to know you in depth you have worked with them and changed your experience around.

We as staff know it can be daunting and scary being on wards and not at home but we try to make it as a positive experience as possible.

It sounds like you have come a long way through your rehabilitation and your ready to go to a lower level of security closer to home, we much prefer you to be closer to home and on the road to recovery.

I am sure your team will keep you as up to date as possible about your discharge. Well done and congratulations and thank you for sharing your story.
