"A very good experience"

About: NHS Forth Valley Queen Margaret Hospital / General Surgery

(as the patient),

In general a very good experience at the Queen Margaret Hospital in Dunfermline, Fife. I have previously had the procedure done elsewhere a few years ago, but overall the professionalism and especially pain management, using entonox (inhale), at Queen Margaret was better than previously experienced elsewhere.

Because my discomfort was minimal, I felt this aided the consultant carrying out the procedure in that they were able to take their time. (On previous occasion, my pain and discomfort was such that I'd felt the consultant was maybe feeling a bit hurried because of this). Staff care, compassion and communication was excellent.

One quite important negative: this was a referral from another health board. On documentation, my name was spelt incorrectly and my address was wrong. I pointed this out to staff, and nurse said they would go and print off other stickers. However, when I got home with my Colonoscopy report, I discovered that not only my name and address was wrong, but that of my GP and GP's practice was incorrect. Given that the consultant said that a copy of the report was to be sent to my GP, this I find worrying.

On this occasion it seemed that there was nothing seriously wrong with me, but I feel that the importance of getting such things as address of patient and GP is not being given enough care and attention. A more vulnerable person, who might have had something seriously wrong with them, might not have noticed these errors, which could be significant.

I also felt that the brochure sent out by Forth Valley NHS regarding prep medication prior to colonoscopy could be improved. It stated that fasting should begin 'after lunch' - but no strict time was given for lunch. It then said that the 1st dose of 'moviprep' solution should be taken between 5pm-7pm. Given that I'd had to have a late lunch, which was quite substantial, finishing about 2:30pm, I feel that this affected the lack of success with the 'moviprep'.

In other words, nothing happened bowel-wise until about 6am. On a similar leaflet posted on the wall at Queen Margaret Hospital, it states 'nothing to be eaten after 1pm', and to take the moviprep solution beween 7pm-9pm. This timing, I believe, would have allowed my lunch to be digested, and for the first moviprep to have been effective.

Dear Faye

Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback on Patient Opinion.

Firstly it was good to read that you managed the endoscopy procedure well with Entonox and that our staff supported you well throughout.

It was concerning to read about the error made with your address, your GP and the spelling of your name and I would feel the same as you if this happened to me. I know that you have been in touch with John in our Booking Unit and he has been looking into this to understand what happened. We will also review the information given to our patients regarding the bowel preparation as the information given from both Boards should be the same and we will discuss this further with our colleagues in Forth Valley.

Thanks again for your comments, it's important that we know when things haven't been quite right as this allows us to learn and improve our service.

I hope that you have recovered well from your procedure.

Kind regards

Gill Ogden

Dear Faye

Thank you for your comments regarding the information that Forth Valley send out with regards to the Moviprep Bowel Preparation leaflet. As Gill says it is important for us as a unit to know when things don't quite meet our patients expectations, and allows us to look at comments and look at ways of improving our service.

In response to this I can only inform you of the reasoning behind the information we provide. The leaflet has been devised and approved by the Forth Valley Endoscopy Users group along with members of the Patient representative group. All the information has been collated from years of experience, research and information from the manufacturer’s instructions.

It is difficult to set a specific time for lunch as we have found that many people work the day prior to their procedure and lunch times to them can vary between 12 noon and 2pm.

The leaflet inform patients that the preparation "May start working within 30 minutes but sometimes it takes much longer and the effects can last up to six hours or in some cases longer." Having given considerable consideration to this we inform patients to take their preparation between 5 - 7pm, to allow for this as some patients still have an effect from the preparation around midnight.

The patient representative group had a great deal of input with this leaflet in recognising the benefits to anyone under taking the preparation.

I hope this information is of some help to you.

Best regards

Sandra Morrow
