"Has the move to improve the science of nursing displaced the art?"

About: Victoria Hospital / Geriatric Assessment Victoria Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I have had experiences across different services and all too often find that staff are not listening. Ward 10 Victoria where it felt as though the patient charter statement displayed so prominently in waiting area was just a form of words. My experience led me to feel that there was either no care plan and a limited treatment plan and staff not listening led to two separate critical incidents.

Nurse led orthopaedic outpatients where nurse was focussed on the tasks on her check sheet and not taking my concerns (about that for which I was being assessed) on board.

A&E where I was seen by a clinician who "put words in my mouth".

It all leads me to ask the question, "do clinicians receive listening skills training? "

I have spoken to other patients who lament similar experiences. It leads me to ask myself the question "has the move to improve the science of nursing displaced the art? "

A great positive experience is that the one common factor, as one Consultant displays first class interpersonal skills.

Dear Stego

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts about nursing, I was interested to hear your perspective on this and interested to hear you describe the art versus the science of nursing. As a nurse myself I recognise the importance of both the art and the science and think it is really important that as nurses we get the balance right between the two. Communication skills form a fundamental element of our nurse education programmes and listening skills are included in our programmes. Communication skills also feature in our on going development programmes across all staff groups, in recognition of the fact that this is important across the professions.

It was disappointing to hear of your experiences and I am sorry that this has left you with questions. I have shared your post with the areas involved and with our Heads of Nursing and Head of Practice and Professional Development. I have also share your post with colleagues in the University as it might be possible for them to use your post to generate discussion with our current student nurses.

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. I hope we can use it to re enforce the importance of getting the balance right between art and science.

Regards

Louise Ewing

Dear Stego

I thought you might be interested to know that we are now routinely using Care opinion postings in a range of educational sessions across staff groups. We are also using examples like yours to support our ongoing discussions with staff about professionalism.

Thanks again for sharing and supporting us in our endeavour to bring about improvements.

Louise
