"I can’t access CBT"

About: Collective Voice: North West Standing Conference Lancashire & South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust / Adult mental health

(as the patient),

I live in Lancaster.

I have paranoid schizophrenia.

I want to access CBT.

I can’t access CBT because I have a severe and enduring mental illness.

NICE guidelines states that all people with schizophrenia should be offered CBT.

I am angry I can’t access CBT.

We are sorry that you are having difficulty in accessing CBT for your difficulties. Lancashire Care Foundation Trust recognises that some people who need our services are not able to access CBT for Psychosis. Unfortunately we do not have enough staff with these skills, and there is currently no-one trained in Lancaster to provide this service. We do recognise the importance of offering this therapy, and we are trying to rectify this through training but unfortunately this objective will take some time to achieve. In Lancaster there are some staff employed within CMHTs who, although they are not fully qualified to provide this therapy formally, may be able to incorporate some elements of CBT into the work they do as Care Co-ordinators. Whilst this is not the same as formal therapy it can be very helpful.

NICE recommend that we think about CBT if you have these difficulties but each individual case is different , and not everyone benefits from CBT depending on how their difficulties affect them. We would suggest that you discuss this with your Care Co-ordinator to see if it is possible for you to have some aspects of CBT incorporated into the work being done with you.
