"My Dad was taken ill and rushed ..."

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske)

(as a relative),

What I liked

My Dad was taken ill and rushed into Treliske this May. It was very distressing for us all, but the staff were amazing and really took good care of my Dad who was very poorly with meningitis. I felt that from the moment the ambulance arrived, through our admission at A&E and a 3 day stay on the ward, the staff were really caring and thorough. I haven't really been into hospital before so a lot of my knowledge comes from the news, I was pleased to see that the staff were all using the antibacterial hand liquid and tht the ward was cleaned thoroughly every day.

What could be improved

The only thing which I think could have improved our experience of the hospital was an increase in staffing. The staff were amazing but more were needed, especially on HDU where my Dad was. The ratio of nurses to patients wasn't high enough considering how poorly some of the patients are. I spent 3 full days (and evenings) there so I got a pretty good picture of how busy the ward was. I would also say that the same was true of the consultants.

Anything else?

We waited too long for an ambulance, but I know that does not come under the direct control of the hospital. However, when the ambulance arrived the crew were absolutely wonderful, professional, caring and reassuring. I can't speak highly enough of them.
