"These people are invaluable"

About: University Hospital Monklands / Care of the Elderly (Wards 14,20,22)

(as a carer),

My mother who has been diagnosed with vascular dementia was admitted two weeks ago at Monklands Hospital. I could point out all the negatives due to an overworked an stretched health care system. Though I would rather highlight those who made a difference and helped My Mother no matter what the circumstances! Some listened, demonstrated compassion through a difficult time, respected and tried to support my family.

Sadly only a few members of staff shone through, and demonstrated these skills. Helen from radiology who took the time to make a frail frightened woman feel at ease by taking an extra 5 mins to listen and explain what was happening and using her initiative to help. Patricia from A&E who in my opinion saved my mother by using her own gut instincts and was brave enough to speak out, thankfully she was listened to. She was also humble enough to say it was a team effort! Annette, Ruby and Marie from ward 20 all went above what others thought acceptable and in my eyes are the staff who should have a decision on what team members make a difference to their ward and hospital. Having 1 member of staff that demonstrates the care, humility and respect that I've witnessed are worth 20 who blindly follow a bad example. These people are invaluable! I cant thank them enough

Dear building bridges

Thank you so much for taking the time to post your comments on Patient Opinion. As the Senior Nurse for Ward 20 and Older People’s Services, I will ensure your comments are shared within the team and in particular with the staff you mention by name. We strive to deliver our care with warmth, kindness and compassion and this is the person centred approach we aim to deliver and I am disappointed to read that you felt that only a few members of staff shone through.

I hope by sharing your experience with the team, staff will understand the impact our care has on patients and their relatives.

Thank you once again for sharing your experience with us.

Kind regards

Eileen
