I was admitted to the surgical short stay unit, expecting an operation under general anaesthetic. The surgeon spoke to me and told me it could be done under local anaesthetic. Straight away the nurse offered me something to eat and drink. So far so good.
I was then left for about 4 and a half hours. At no point did anyone speak to me, so eventually I went to the nurse station to find out what was happening. I was told then that one of the theatres wasn't in use and that there had been some delays. I asked if I could have a drink, and it was only then that I was offered some lunch and an apology for the total lack of attention/information in the previous 4+ hours. Another patient then noticed that I had been given a sandwich and went off to find a nurse so that he too could eat.
After my operation I was brought back to the ward, and left. I had to ask twice if I could have a drink. I understand that everyone is busy, nurses did occasionally come into the ward, but nobody thought to speak or offer any help unless it was specifically requested. I would prefer not to go there again
"A difficult experience"
