"NHS Pillar to post"

About: Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / General Medicine St John's Hospital / General Medicine

(as the patient),

I feel I need to bring this to someone’s attention as I do not think this is right, I phoned my doctor this morning to book my B12 injection and booked my appointment. Fantastic, so I hung up forgetting to book an appointment about a procedure that investigates the small bowel.

I rang back to ask how my referral was coming along with the procedure which my doctor advised I should get as I explained what was happening which is I am always tired due to having to go to the loo 5 times a day for a movement and this has been ongoing for a spell now.

I am also having an exhausted feeling as going 5 times per day takes it out of you and also for the fact I have never been 5 times a day ever until I came back from holiday in June last year my referral from my doctor was in mid- June, so thought it a bit odd as it is now about 19 weeks ago and I am sure the Scottish Government said their charter is 12 weeks so what is going on.

When I called my doctor in East Calder to get feedback from my doctor, I was told that I could not speak with him as he was busy, so I was referred by the receptionist to call St. John’s Hospital who said their hands are tied and that I would have to phone the Edinburgh hospital. I have no clue what hospital this is but my guess it is the Royal Infirmary at Little France.

I never got through. It just kept ringing so I phoned my doctors who then told me to phone St. John’s who then told me to call the Edinburgh number yes you have guessed it is the old pillar to post routine, I had enough so I called my doctors for 4th time and asked that they get me someone who knows what they are doing and is high in authority to give me a call back.

I was told by the receptionist that someone would call me in a half hour and to which she did and she said she on my behalf called the Edinburgh number and according to her got thru right away maybe, maybe not and she has escalated that I have this procedure as I am concerned as a priority and that I should hear back in a few weeks, to put it bluntly I will not hold my breath on this being the case.

What I need is for this to be investigated as to why this procedure is the procedure as it does not work it should be one direct number with options and the ability to be put thru to the right department and to be able to talk to someone to arrange if need be an appointment or a procedure after a referral has been duly noted from the person’s doctor, there is too much in the middle getting lost, and not enough correspondence from the hospital.

There should not be unless there is a very good reason why a hospital makes a decision that a procedure or operation not to go ahead and to basically go over a doctors head and not inform the doctor or the patient why when what where the procedure is being cancelled or put on the back burner, which in my opinion is what has and still is happening to me.

The charter which the NHS has not followed is Your health, your rights and I feel badly let down with the NHS as if I do not have enough to be concerned with I have this nonsense too.

Update posted by Joe234 (the patient)

I would be very grateful for you looking into this for me as I was offered this procedure, but for family commitments had to cancel on 2 occasions some time ago, but when I did this I was taken off the waiting list completely but was not told that this was going to happen. the administrator at Little France hospital I feel has too much power to decide what is right for the patient, so I then decided that regardless of any family hiccup's, I felt I needed to get back on the register, which after speaking to the doctor I was best advised that I have the procedure. I look forward to hearing from you in due course appreciated.
