"hernia repair"

About: Peninsula NHS Treatment Centre

On the whole, very satisfied, the operation went well, and the staff were very helpful.

Two minor niggles - the consultant had asked whether I wanted the procedure under general or local anaesthetic, and we agreed to a local.

On the day, this had been ignored, and the procedure was done under a general anaesthetic. Secondly, audible privacy was pretty non-existent, and I heard the full discussion between consultant and patient in the next bay.

This included graphic details on his circumcision, including the effects of the local anaesthetic on his penis. Doubtless, the patient heard all details on my procedure.

If possible, maybe patients could be given an option to have such discussions in private.

Dear Stephen,

thank you for your comments. I am glad the operation went well and the staff were helpful. I appreciate that you found the discussion regarding another patients surgery uncomfortable and can only apologise for this. The Day surgery unit is small and has limited space for private discussion with the Consultants but we will look at how we can improve this moving forward. I am concerned that your preference for a local anaesthetic during your procedure was ignored and would like to look into this further. If you could contact me on 01752 506027 so that we can discuss this and I can investigate further.

Many thanks

Sue Farrell Head of Nursing and Clinical Services
