"Continence post childbirth"

About: Locala Community Partnerships CIC / Continence advisory service

(as the patient),

A complicated birth left me with stress incontinence which impacted on my confidence, self esteem and most importantly my willingness to undertake physical activity outside the privacy of my own home. Having tried pelvic floor exercises immediately after the birth with not enough improvement, I was advised that the next step was surgery and to wait until I had finished having children.

Not wanting to undergo surgery whilst my child was small and fearful of taking time off work, I tolerated the stress incontinence for many years. I referred myself to Locala recently and have been delighted with the support, advice and encouragement I have received. I was given a full assessment and tailored exercises which have made a huge difference.

Thank you for taking the time to post on Patient Opinion.

Although childbirth is classed as a 'normal' experience many women do suffer with symptoms of stress incontinence after having a baby. Birth plans are put in place but deliveries can often be more complicated than expected.

You highlight very clearly the impact bladder symptoms can have on every aspect of a person's life.

After 9 months of pregnancy followed by a the experience of bringing a child into the world many women are really keen to reclaim their body back! It is very distressing when bladder leaks prevent new mums from exercising.

I'm very pleased that you had such a positive experience of our service. The relevant advice and support along with effective pelvic floor rehabilitation can make such a huge difference.

Very best wishes
