"NHS24 to Ambulance to Hospital Stay to Taxi hame"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance University Hospital Ayr / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as the patient),

Earlier this month,  I was unfortunate enough to suffer severe Sciatica flare up resulting in 12 hour admissions, the first at Crosshouse, and the remaining two at Ayr. I don't recall much at all regarding the Crosshouse 'experience' nor the exact date for the first Ayr Station 7, 12 hour observation. I should say that the first admission was for a impulsive desperate act to relieve the excruciating pain I had been suffering since my first GP visit, with the second attempt being more of an 'end all the pain' attempt!

AMBULANCE SERVICE:

What I do remember is the excellent care from the ambulance teams that came to my assistance, and I hope that you are able to ascertain all the folk involved. Especially the last lad & lassie in the early hours of Friday, thanks for the 'gas & air' instruction and supply: ).

A & E NURSE [S] and DOCTOR:

The pain relief service appeared to be very slow in arriving, I seem to remember conversation and laughter whilst I was in agony still. It felt a wee bit disconcerting, and I felt abandoned at that time!

However once the two essential tests were completed, pain relief followed in graduation, the painkiller injections ending the hours of agony. A minicab was ordered for me, and whilst waiting I nervously waited to see if the pain would return.

Luckily I was able to walk the short distance from chair to minicab for a pain free ride back hame.

I sincerely believe that had I not been taken into hospital on both  occasions, followed by A&E, the next level pain relief medications would not have been prescribed by my multi GP practice where in short notice appointments you 'take' pot luck whom you see! On the appointment for this Friday I was able to see my usual and one of my preferred doctors who took the time to listen, and start me off on the next level pain relief medication. So far? almost pain free - thank you all

Except in my case where for 3 consecutive appointments, I saw the same GP who initially did nae prescribe anything, saying " it would settle down on its own"

After that nothing additional was offered other than the medications I was taking which were of very little or nae use at all.

In conclusion, I would like to especially thank Karen  for her understanding 'bedside manner' and the appointment arranged for next month: )

Dear rayfaetroon60

Thank you for sharing your experience.

Whilst I am fortunate enough not to suffer with Sciatica, I have been to a number of patients who do and so have some appreciation of the excruciating pain you must have been in. I was really glad to hear about the care you received from the ambulance staff on that Friday and that they were able to ease your pain.

I would be more than happy to pass on your thanks to the ambulance staff but would need a few more details to be sure of identifying the right people. If you are able to provide more details, you can contact me on 0131 314 0003 or at martinesposito@nhs.net

In the meantime, I do hope that you are still able to manage you pain and wish you well for the future.

Thank you again for sharing.

Take care

Martin.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear rayfaetroon60,

I am sorry you have found your experience a bit of a mixture. I can certainly pass this to both the Emergency departments in Ayrshire but it may be more difficult to ensure it reaches the correct Karen. I have identified two GPs called Karen, so I will send it to them both, I am sure they will know if it relates to them.

Thank you for taking the time to tell us your full and frank experience, you seem to have been having a tough time with the sciatica and pain control but I hope you are getting sorted now for the long term.

Take care,

Eunice

Hello Eunice, how great it is to be able to pass my thanks on through this facility.

I believe that there may be some confusion over GP Karen 1 or 2?

The Karen I referred to was on the Psychiatry liaison team. I received a visit from her on my first 12 hour observation stay in station 7, and at that time made the appointment for me for Oct. I hope that helps as I am uncertain of Karen's exact title.

Thank you

Ah, this is very helpful, thank you I thought you meant a GP (silly me). I am glad you find this a useful facility. I know I may be biased but I agree with you. (I'm not sure I am meant to say that - too late, I have now).

Take care

Eunice

I have not mentioned the GP Surgery that played a major role in managing the pain that I experienced from the worst Sciatica flare up I experienced as mentioned above.

Somehow I have been thinking that Patient Opinion is all about from Ambulance to Hospital.

Last Friday, after coming back from Ayr A&E I had an appointment with one of the GP's at the Portland Surgery here in Troon. I don't ken if I am allowed to mention names without permission first, so I'll simply say that in his surgery room there is a large scale model of a Dalek!

I was prescribed the medication that the A&E doctor mentioned to me, along with two other medications. Since leaving A&E that morning, I have been virtually Sciatica free, and just the usual daily occurrence of my lower back pain.

Today, at my review appointment the medications continue with advice to remove 2 of them after the weekend and use as and when required. I am to make a further review appointment in a month.

I wanted to show my appreciation in a gesture as well as verbally, which I have done by delivering a thank you card, and a well known boxed confectionery selection. Suffice to say the prickly part of rose stems, and 'tons' of them!

Very clever, 'Tons' of thank you messages in there!!

I do also forward the stories to GP practice if I can work out which practice the story is about, you made it easy for me.

Thank you. I am glad your are getting on so well with your pain management too.

Best wishes,

Eunice
