I was at home when I discovered I was bleeding heavily. At nearly 40 weeks pregnant I knew this wasn't normal and called 999. A paramedic arrived quickly and didn't seem overly concerned despite me saying I was bleeding heavily, he didn't examine me. He just said to hang on as he didn't want to do a home birth! Had to wait another 20 minutes before ambulance arrived. they then discussed for 5 minutes which hospital to take me to. I insisted I wanted to go to nearest one despite not being booked into there for my planned birth. I then sat on the drive in the ambulance whilst they called the hospital maternity unit to ask what to do, they said to get me to nearest maternity unit quickly. I requested the ambulance person to check me out as I could feel lots of blood and at this point he then asked the driver to put lights on and go. When I reached the maternity unit at queens the midwives very quickly checked me and baby's heart rate was very poor. I was given an emergency c section within minutes. They saved my babies life and I can not thank the staff at queens enough. Their care was amazing, each and every one that treated me at queens was kind, caring and just fantastic. Everyone that was involved in the procedure came to see us and check we were ok. They all said how lucky we were and any further delay the outcome would not have been good. The after care on the Ward was great and the nurses were all helpful and caring, Especially the midwife that helped me breast feed. Thank you Queens maternity you are amazing! And just for the record this was a Saturday... 24 hour NHS
