"Lack of nurses"

About: Royal Bournemouth General Hospital / Vascular surgery

I was admitted to the surgical ward 18 for a blood clot in my arm on the evening of14th Sept and operated on very quickly by the consultant with the help of a wonderful registrar and an amazing theatre staff and recovery nurses. It was the after care that was abysmal. The next day I even rang my daughter in Salisbury to try to get help, for at least 3/4 of an hour no one came to help me when I was in agony.

Even when I went to the nursing station I was told to go back to bed and someone would come( eventually some one did.)

The next day I was moved to ward 14 all the helpers there were great especially the lovely people bringing the tea etc.But I can honestly say that I did not see one nurse until I asked about having my arm dressed before I left in the evening. When I went to wash in the morning I came back to a lovely clean bed but also 2 pain killers left on my table but not a nurse in sight.I know this is wrong no nurse asked me any questions about what I needed to take or if I required anything. It seems to me that the hospital needs to look into its procedure regarding nursing staff reposbilities before there is a big problem.Just a hello or a good morning would be a start. Dear Ms Mcmanus

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience of our surgical department and we are sorry to hear it did not attain the high standards we aspire to and you would expect to receive.

Thank you for highlighting that the care you had during surgery and recovery was very good but we are concerned that you felt compelled to call your daughter for help during your stay on Ward 18 and felt that no registered nurse attended to you.

I have raised your concerns with the Ward Sisters and also the Matron who have asked me to pass on their apologies and assured me they would investigate and monitor the situation on both wards.

Staff administering medications will be reminded to check patient details before dispensing any medication and we are sorry this did not appear to happen on this occasion. We will ensure an incident form is completed and is presented as part of our corporate medicine governance meeting by the meeting for shared learning.

If you would like to discuss any of the concerns you have raised in more detail please contact us through our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALs) on 01202 704886.

We hope that you are now recovering well from your surgery and wish you well for the future.

Regards

Patient Experience Team
