"The best in the country"

About: Northern General Hospital / Cardiology

I have been a patient in the cardiology unit at the NGH since 2002 when I had an heart attack. After that occurrence I was told by the then consultant at Rotherham that I had a blocked artery but they could do little about it and they would control my angina with meds. I was 38 years old at the time and I was not satisfied and asked for a 2nd opinion. It was then I was introduced to another Consultant. They were a breath of fresh air. They unblocked that artery and put in a stent. 6 years later they put in another. 2 years ago I developed arythmia and was seen by another Consultant. I was having an irregular heart beat up to 3 days at a time. Once again it was no problem to them and shortly after an ablation followed. It was a 90% success ( not unusual for this procedure).

I was on the list to have it completed when my angina returned. This time I saw a Professor. Without a doubt the Proffessor is one of the best (if not the best) cardiac surgeons in the country. I spent a week on the Chesterman Ward, and although this is not an experience we want, the nursing staff, junior doctors and all support staff were second to none. By the time my operation came around I was extremely anxious. I had got it in my mind that I may need heart by pass. I expressed my concerns to the Professor who immediately gave me reassurance and total belief in their ability. Indeed the calmest I had felt over those last 6 weeks was whilst I was under their care and the care of their team in the theatre. Of course the angioplasty was a success. The prof had told me it would be before we went in. So, when asked if I would recommend my family to the NGH cardio team the answer would have to be no. I would insist! Thank you to all the staff in Chesterman 1, Chesterman outpatients and to all nurses, support staff, doctors and surgeons.

You are all extremely professional in the job that you do.
