"The staff seemed generally helpful"

About: James Paget University Hospital

(as a relative),

What I liked

The staff seemed generally helpful

What could be improved

We were the next of kin to a 94 year old who has a reduced function heart valve that causes her to black out without warning. My criticism is that the consultant held a meeting with us and the patient on the ward around her bed where personal medical details were openly discussed within the hearing of other patients and their visitors. BUT I had to chase the consultant down the corridor to ask for a prognosis and outcome that I felt could not be asked in front of the patient. Why in matters of this nature can't the relatives be taken to a room and the options discussed? I'm sure many relatives do not want the patient discussed about in a public forum and many patients must be distressed to have know that their detail are being broadcast to all and sundry.

Anything else?

we all have feelings and Doctors need to make sure that these are tended to as much as any medical condition...
