"My dad didn't have the pain relief he needed"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Radiotherapy

(as a relative),

My dad had been in agony since April 2008 and he told me he was convinced he had cancer. He was told a number of times he had osteoporosis. In the end he was told he had cancer. It had spread and he lived for 6 weeks after this. I think that was terrible as he didn't have the pain relief I think he should have had and his death wasn't pleasant.

Dear Jo1964

I am sorry that your feedback to Patient Opinion did not receive a response. This was not acceptable and I apologise for this. I have been reviewing all of the feedback on the site as part of work to ensure that responses receive prompt and timely acknowledgement.

I know how distressing it is when symptoms are not controlled as well as they might be at the end of life and was saddened to read that this was your Dad's experience.

Our clinical teams are constantly reviewing and improving the ways in which they involve relatives with the care provided to those they love while they are in hospital - although I know it will be small consolation to you, I thought it important to take time to let you know that your feedback is appreciated and that I will ensure it is included in learning and improvement discussions that focus on the importance of ensuring that people don't have the experiences you have outlined.

Respectfully yours,

Craig White

Update posted by Jo1964 (a relative)

Dear Mr White

Thank you for your response.

My story was greatly edited and there was a catalogue of tragic events surrounding my dads illness, a lot of which involved Crosshouse Hospital. I asked for my story to be taken off the site as I wasn't happy with the way it had come across but this never happened for whatever reason.

I did complain about the NHS verbally and was asked to put it in writing, but there was so much to complain about that I didn't know where to start and I was exhausted by the whole experience that I decided it was better to try and move on from it.

Thanks for taking the time to read and respond to my story.

Regards

Jo1964
