"Delay in transport meant rushed cataract operation at Barnsley"

About: Montagu Hospital / Ophthalmology Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust

(as the patient),

I was treated on the day care ward at Montagu hospital for cataract removal. I was very pleased with the kindness and compassion shown by the nurses at Montagu.

However, in my opinion, the actual operation to remove a cataract from my left eye could have been better. I was also angry that I was not allowed to drive myself for day surgery, a medicar was booked for 11.30am, but no transport arrived.

As the arranged transport did not turn up for me, I rang my consultant's secretary, I was assured that she had informed the ambulance service but they had failed to book me in. I was then asked to phone for a taxi and I would be reimbursed, I refused to do this. However, a private taxi arrived for me at 1.40pm, arriving at Montagu 2.05pm, consequently then everything was rush, rush, rush. I was the last one down to theatre, the surgeon was quite abrupt and I truly felt everything throughout the whole operation.

Eight weeks ago, I underwent the same operation on my right eye, carried out by a different surgeon and I never felt a thing or suffered any discomfort. Many thanks to Mr. Noble who did the first eye op.

A big thank you to the nursing staff on day surgery ward.
