"Very poor experience on Mon 5th Sept 2016"

About: Peterlee Community Hospital / General medicine

Unfortunately I had a very poor experience at this facility on Mon 5th Sept. I came to the community hospital at 19.00 with a suspected water infection, and brought a sample. I was seen by the triage nurse who completed what they described as a basic test on the sample, which they said was inconclusive. They advised that the Doctor would probably prescribe me antibiotics based on my symptoms, so advised me to wait to see the Doctor. Just as I was about to leave the triage room they told me that actually there was a much shorter queue to see the nurse, and that the nurse could also "help".

I waited a further 90 minutes and eventually saw the nurse. The nurse advised that there was no clear sign of a water infection from the test result, but agreed that my symptoms did sound like a water infection (I am also Type 1 diabetic which can lead to water infections being more common). However they just advised that I "see my GP".

I am a student teacher and work 8-6pm, and cannot see my GP in normal hours - that is the whole reason I attended the Community Hospital. When I asked if they would not consider prescribing antibiotics based on my symptoms, the nurse advised she "could not prescribe" as they were a paramedic not a nurse!

To make things worse they told me that the triage nurse "was a prescriber" and could have prescribed me the antibiotics. I left the Community Hospital absolutely no further forward, after 2 hours 20 minutes, and with no confidence whatsoever in the treatment or advice I had recieved.
