"Waiting times too long & staff No time to assess"

About: Worcestershire Royal Hospital / Accident and emergency

My mum was admitted by ambulance at about 13.00 hours yesterday (10/9/16) we called an Ambulance as she was confused, unable to get off her sofa and unable to tell us when she had last eaten or used loo. Paramedics were concerned she may have been in sofa since Wednesday! Once at hospital she was placed on a trolley in the corridor. It was very busy, lined with trolleys 4 ambulances crews waiting for their trolleys back but nowhere for people to be moved too! Utter Chaos! Mum Was not seen by a doctor until around 15.20 he stared 'I only have 10 minutes to get you sorted' the doctor was then disturbed 3 times while talking to us - twice by other patients who were in the corridor calling out/crying and once by a fellow doctor asking them questions! So Mum's 10 minutes were not hers! The doctor said they would arrange bloods to be taken. The doctor passed a while later and asked if they had been done (they had not) the doctor spoke to a nurse and they said it on list but their nurses are 'overwhelmed' at the moment! We were moved down the corridor around a corner.

A nice member of staff came and gave us all a cup of tea so we knew we were in for a wait. Bloods taken at around 17.30 and we were told it be an hour for results. I had to leave mum as needed to get home as my sister had my children. My other sister then came to sit with her. At around 20.44 my sister messaged to say they think there will be a bed. So they're going to get her settled in the corridor just in case & gave her a pillow. My sister left her at around 21.00 so she could rest. When my sister called hospital this morning, mum still on trolley in A & E but if her mobility returned she could go home! My sister said that wasn't the worry - the confusion and forgetfulness was....nurse didn't seem to have the relevant info! However no one spoke to us apart from the doctor yesterday! And the doctor clearly wasn't fully listening to what we saying as called away 3 times in out '10 mins' and obviously confusion in old people no longer thought of as a worry! This hospital cannot cope with the numbers coming in and it's not fair on the staff who are obviously over stretched!

Charlotte, thank you for leaving your comments. I am sorry to hear about your mother’s recent experience, no patient should have to experience this. I will make sure your comments are passed onto the management.

Please contact our Patient Services Department on 0300 123 1732 or email wah-tr.PET@nhs.net if you would like us to investigate your concerns or arrange for you to speak to a member of staff about this.
