I checked in as a day case at the Alex Birch Day surgery unit and was asked questions at the reception desk to confirm my identity. I then waited with a number of other patients and their families and friends in the general waiting area, it was very busy. A member of staff came and asked personal questions very loudly, everybody was staring, and by the end of the episode the whole waiting room knew that I was single, lived alone, had nobody to collect me, had nobody at home to look after me, that I was hoping to manage with a local anaesthetic but may have to revert to a general etc. She questioned me over and over, getting louder all the time as I dissolved into tears unable to answer. I was in such a state by the time I was taken through to the ward I considered leaving. I realise that my inability to deal with any social situations made this much worse but I think privacy should be respected and I don't feel it was in this case. My care, once on the ward, was exceptional.
