"This first visit has been cancelled and rescheduled five times"

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Trauma & orthopaedics (wards 26, 27, 61 & 62 ) Royal Hospital for Sick Children (Yorkhill) / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as the patient),

After some on and off low back pain (and lots of ibuprofen) over circa 13 years, I have finally now become a complete cripple. An orthopaedic surgeon told me a year ago that my nerve is impinged, there is some stenosis, and that 'having allowed the pain' for so long may have now permanently damaged the nerves. The same orthopaedic surgeon scheduled me for a visit at Yorkhill, probably leading to a steroid injection into the spine. This first visit has been cancelled and rescheduled five times. Only the last time there was no reschedule and when my GP enquired she was told they are short staffed but they haven't forgotten about me.

I used to hillwalk swim and do all sorts of activities (and used to work full time). Now my limitations are so great that I need a day of recovery after a day of (any) activity so I cannot even try to get another full time job. I have a part time one, and all the money I earn goes into pilates, osteopaths and masseurs as the NHS professionals all recommended these as they would help, which they do, but I cannot seem to get back to normal levels of activity.

Dear bookai

Thank you for taking the time to post on Patient Opinion. I am sorry to read about what you have been going through. I am also sorry to read about your appointment being rescheduled a number of times.

I would like to look into this a bit further for you. To enable me to do this, would you be able to email me at Lisa.Ramsay@ggc.scot.nhs.uk with some personal details.

Best wishes
Lisa

Update posted by bookai (the patient)

Hi Lisa

Good news - I have now a further appointment that hopefully won't be cancelled.

I still am rather frustrated not to be able to do my normal activities but hopefully resolution is on the way.

I have also seen some signs of improvement in my pain levels - especially after I ditched all the medicines.

My husband has just been diagnosed with diabetes and the level of care is phenomenal - unfortunately back pain isn't at all high on the agenda of the NHS

Thank you for reading and responding
