Um-pa-pu, um-pa-pu - the cry of the cardiac monitor rang out every 20 seconds in the 4 bedded W.G.Grace ward in St Bartholomew's Hospital.Having recently stopped off for an urgent cardiac catheterisation and cardiac ultrasound study at Bart's Heart Centre following excellent paramedical care at London's City Airport, I was cared for by 16 different nationalities over the next 72 hours. Without exception and at every job level I received throughout thoroughly professional care, kindness and humour. At a time when the NHS is in serious trouble and when younger hospital Doctors threaten to disrupt patient care, there remains, at the coal face, a multinational well of decency and goodwill. This must not be cast aside in future changes.
