"Excellent staff to patient treatment but a few..."

About: Hinchingbrooke Hospital / Accident and emergency

I was admitted with viral meningitis to A&E and quickly treated. The staff were respectful and explained in detail the treatment I would require. My family were with me and again they were treated with respect and kept up to date with my progress. I was transfered to AAU where again I was treated quickly through out the night. My only complaint in AAU was a nurse assigned to me, though I was on barrier nursing, seemed to have no respect for the possible transfer of my infection as they did not gown up or place a face mask on for protection, claiming to be immune to the virus, not considering hospital protocol that it may be tranfered to other patients. The nurse also complained about my treatment to me claiming that the Doctors should not have given me the medication I was receiving without knowing exactly what my symptoms were. I was transfered to MSSU where again I received good treatment in a side ward, yet the same nurse who cared for me in AAU was now covering, the following day, again failed to take precautions with regards my barrier nursing. I was on a drip and it was not working properly, the nurse came to me and stated they would take me off the drip onto free flow, as they did not know how to operate the machine, which I felt concerned at as to whether I would get the right medication when needed. Saying all this I am overall satisfied with they way I was cared for by other staff, including night staff, who all were very busy but when attending to me still had compassion and respect for me and always seemed to care and enjoy their work.At one other time I was moved from a side room onto the main ward, and two members of staff, not qualified nurses, seemed to argue over who was doing what in front of me, then I had to assist with moving my bed, as the other staff member had left to carry out other duties. This I was not happy about as I was still weak and not knowing how the beds moved, I had to physically try and lift the bed to move it through the room door. Once on the main ward in bay 2 bed 2 the over head light exploded above me whilst I was reading covering me in glass. One staff member seemed to ignore the fact and another came to move me into a clean bed, yet at no time was I asked if I was okay, nor did I receive an apology. These are only small issues I wish to raise as overall the care was very good indeed. I was discharged only to be re-admitted the following Monday evening, whereby I presented to A&E understanding my GP had phoned ahead via the on call registrar yet A&E had no knowledge of me re-attending, yet after a short wait I was fast tracked into AAU where again I was treated fantastically by the staff, and once again in the side room on barrier nursing I was treated by a nurse fantastically who even spent time talking with me about everyday matters and appeared very interested and caring in their role as a nurse. Back on MSSU I was treated excellently and I also praise the porters for their hard work.

Thank you very much for your feedback and for the constructive comments regarding your experience. We are very sorry to hear about the less positive aspects - and will pass the details on to the teams involved so that they are aware. If you feel able to, it would be useful if you could contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 01480 428964, or by email: hch-tr.pals@nhs.net so that we can discuss this in more detail with you.

Thanks again for taking the time to leave feedback and we hope that you are now well on the road to recovery.
