My aged relative was referred to QMC neurology to investigate his movement disorder which had virtually prevented him from walking more than a few steps. Incredibly this referral was "bounced" by the consultant, with advice to discuss this with his GP. We opted to be referred to Kings Mill Hospital in Mansfield - despite some of the neurologists working at both sites. We were swiftly seen, had several blood tests, nerve conduction studies and MRI which clearly demonstrated the responsible pathology which can be treated surgically. I suggest that if a GP wants their patient to have a neurology opinion then this really should not be denied by a Consultant who has not seen the patient. I think the neurology department should examine its treatment of referrals, audit the outcome of them and change their systems to become a more accessible service. The days of Consultants behaving like Gods have long gone.
"Referral refused"
