"awful service"

About: Lister Hospital

I attended the A&E service due to a very swollen leg, ankle and foot with no obvious cause and on the advise of an emergency GP. My visit started well but once I actually got into A&E it went downhill. The first nurses I saw tried to tell me there was no swelling present at all and refused to do the blood tests that triage had said should be done. I then eventually saw a doctor who took my bloods and examined me. Once this was all done I was made to sit in a chilly corridor on a hard metal chair at 4am to wait for my blood results. I sat here until 7:45am. |During this time I had a n-urse inform me that not all my results were back and if she had not come back to me in 20 minutes I should go and find her. This made me laugh as I could hardly walk as it was. Eventually at 7:45am I went to question where my results were and was told that the analyser had broken and they'd had to be sent away. so I then asked if there was somewhere more comfortable I could sit as I'm 17 weeks pregnant. I was taken to CDU and left in a small waiting room on a slightly more comfortable chair. As the morning dragged on I was informed by a new doctor that I may have to be admitted for a blood clot on my lungs but they had to wait for the blood tests to come back. At 11:30 I also had to ask for some insulin as I had none on me and needed some for my diabetes control. I wazs a tad annoyed no one had even checked to see if I needed any medication for my diabetes which they were fully aware of. In the end they gave me a blood thinning injection guessing that I should be treated for a dvt and told I would have to return monday to attend a clinic. I am disgusted that A) my treatment was guessed and after 11 1/2 hours in the department I still had no idea what the actual problem was B) a pregnant woman could be left in total discomfort in a cold corridor for 3 hours when there were empty beds in A&E and C) not once was my unborn child given a check over despite being told I was going to be sent to obs and gynae for a full check on baby. The whole experience was a disgrace and in future I will attend Watford A&E

We're sorry that your experience of the Lister's emergency department was not as we would have liked or expected. We feel that the important matters you've raised warrant further investigation, but for us to do that we would need a little more information.

If you are happy for us to do that, which we would really welcome having the chance to do on your behalf, then please email us at generalenquiries.enh-tr@nhs.net. We hope you do give us a chance to investigate what happened.
