"Excellent treatment but more information please"

About: The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, King's Lynn, NHS Foundation Trust

After a visit to A&E, I was referred to the eye clinic the next day when I was diagnosed with a torn retina.

The ophthalmologist I saw was professional, good humoured and pleasant and referred me for immediate laser surgery.

When I went in for the surgery, i was asked to sign a consent form, but the contents were not explained and, being full of anaesthetic eye drops, I could not read it.

I therefore signed without being aware of the potential risks of the treatment.

Similarly after the surgery, the only advice I received was to refrain from gardening.

It would have been helpful to have received more detailed information, both verbally and in a leaflet, about any possible complications, what I should and should not do, any likelihood of pain or discomfort etc etc.

On my return a month later to see if the treatment had been successful, I again saw the original opthamologist who I am pleased to say confirmed that the treatment had been successful and who again was both pleasant and professional.

Thank you for taking the time to post such a detailed comment on your treatment, such feedback is invaluable. I glad that all your treatment and surgery was successful but I am sorry that we did not keep you adequately informed either in terms of the consent process or with follow up information. I will ensure that your comments are passed onto the Ophthalmology service for them to address within their service. We are also doing some work at the moment within the organisation as a whole to look at how we can improve the provision of information to patients and your comments will definitely feed into this process. I hope that your eye is now completely healed.
