"Lack of support for mental health patients from out of hours GP"

About: Adult mental health / Crisis Resolution and Home Treatment Team Southampton City PCT / Emergency GP out of hours service

(as the patient),

I have found that when I am in a crisis the psychiatric service have improved and are now very supportive.

I am however concerned about the lack of support from the out of hours GP’s, particularly those concerned with the out of hours service.

I sometimes feel suicidal and have been refused help- told they will do nothing instead of making one short phone call to refer me the psychiatric services for a visit or contact with the ‘home team’.

On one occasion when I rang my GP surgery I was told I was ringing too late in the day and refused help. It seems to me that the adult psychiatry has a low profile with some GP’s.
