"I had a total pancolectomy"

About: Good Hope Hospital / Colorectal surgery

(as the patient),

My father got diagnosed with bowel cancer at the age of 59. My uncle died of rectum cancer 3 months prior to my dads diognosis. My dad had a j pouch but he had a leak and he had a second operation which caused stress on his heart my dad died on the opetation table. I got diagnosed with multiple polyps 60 plus late last year. This had left me a dilema do I have the same op as my dad or do I have a permenant stoma.

I have a lovely and supportive family but it was my decision. I decided to have a colostomy. The support I have had from good hope from surgeons to ward 16 nurses to tea lady who put a smile on my face this is no mean feat especially at 7 in the morning and when I just want to cry from lack of sleep. I am fed up with people taking a pop at the nhs the nhs might be failing but the nurses arnt in my opinion.

I had a student nurse helping me at the early stages hooked up to several machines bedridden she was so caring also had good banter which took my mind off all my other emotions which the nurses knew about after reading my files. One nurse said I was brave but all said and done they are the brave ones helping others fight there illness. This message is to all the nurses who came across me the week I was in Ward 16 you are all stars im now recovering and planning some sort of fundraising / Awareness for late next year health permitted once again thanks from me and my young family please show the nurses this message thanks.

Some suggestions for what could be improved are the food as I feel it didn't support my diet. The equipment was not on the ward and there wasn't a nurses work station which meant that time was wasted having to collect things. Things that were good were the equipment and support mattress, the nurses who would do anything to help and they were supportive and helped to educate me.
