"No Ambulance waiting"

About: Scottish Ambulance Service / Patient Transport Service

(as the patient),

I use the patient transport service from my home on Arran to Crosshouse hospital. On the last two occasions the service has been poor.

We arrived back at Brodick and no Ambulance was waiting at the Jetty to take me home. The Pier staff checked with the service and the Ambulance had been called out - I waited 50 mins till the Ambulance came.

A month later there was no Ambulance waiting - it was out on a 999 call and no-one had told the pier staff.. There was still no sign after 30mins so one of our neighbours helped and took us home.

I am 96 years old so it is alot to journey to the hospital. Is there only one ambulance on the island?

Previously it has been ok.

Dear Beduoin 886,

It was with concern that I read your post. I am very sorry that you waited so long and did not get notified that there would be a delay for you. It must have been very frustrating.

The ambulance crews on the island are notified when there is any patient who needs to be taken home from the ferry. We do have patient transport as well as emergency ambulances on Arran but the non emergency staff do not work 24 hours a day and so we do use A&E crews sometimes. If the crews are out on an emergency then we should be notifying the ferry that there will be a delay.

I will ensure that the staff who deal with Ayrshire and Arran are made aware of the problems that you have had and will also make sure that they are following all of the procedures that I would expect them to.

Please accept my apology for the problems you have had. If you do wish to speak to me I would be pleased to do so. My contact number is 0141 810 6101.

Pat
