"Medical oncology"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Medical Oncology

(as the patient),

I attended medical oncology for the first time last monday at wishaw general. the unit was bright and airy with a nice outlook to gardens, the waiting room had comfortable chairs, a TV, and you could make tea or coffee while you wait, as a nervous first timer, it helped to relax. I attended for the second time today and the unit had moved. my husband and I got there at 9am. had blood taken at 9. 10am. and told to come back an hour later, we got back to the unit at10. 05am. we had to sit in a waiting room with no windows, hard plastic chairs, no TV, no way to make tea or coffee. it was like being in a cardboard box. we had to sit there till 12. 0, clock. I suggest whoever thought of this should try it for 2hours, if you were not depressed before arrived you will be when you leave. everyone who was there today said the same thing. oncology patients have to wait hours for drugs to come up. not looking forward to having to go through it again.

Dear madaboutliam

Thank you for taking the time to give us some feedback on your recent experience of attending the new medical oncology day unit. As we have recently re-located to this new area we are aware that we still need to develop the waiting areas. To ensure comfort and facilities are more appropriate and welcoming to prevent the situation that you describe in your message we will focus on emulating the same type of environment as your first visit in ward 2. Apart from the TV, comfortable seating and tea/coffee making facilities we would welcome suggestions on how we can improve this. If you would like to discuss this further with me please call 07583181549.

I'm concerned about the time you had to wait for your husband’s treatment. I will work with the team to explore how we can improve the process for all patients.

Thanks again for taking the time to contact us.

I hope your husband’s treatment is going well.

warm regards

Margaret

Dear Madaboutliam

Thank you for your voice message that you left on my mobile.

I would like to apologise for not being available when you called and for assuming that it was your husband who was the patient. We are still working through issues with our new area.

If you would still like a chat please call me in my office on 01236 712529.

warm regards

Margaret
