"Agency Nurses"

About: Kettering General Hospital

I greatly appreciate the difficult circumstances that the A&E department have to work under and am writing this following a second hand account given to me by my daughter who spent 6 hours there accompanying my ex-wife who was suffering breathing difficulties. Although she was successfully treated (thank you) her visit was unnecessarily extended by communication issues. Firstly It seems that on the night in question the agency nurses involved didn't know the location of items they required and had to spend some time looking for them. This is a simple matter easily overcome either by better labelling of cupboards or by making a supermarket style location list available to them. Secondly at 1am, my wife was told she could go home as soon as the cannula in the back of her hand was removed. This took them over an hour to do because the doctor had taken her notes away and they didn't know where he was - another communications issue.

Thank you for taking the time to feedback on NHS choices. I'm pleased to read that generally the care and treatment that was received was positive and whilst I understand this is through secondary information you have made a very good suggestion. We will look into having laminated lists on cupboards to help with the allocation of equipment / stock and medications. We continue to work in what is considered to be challenging times for the NHS, especially within Emergency Care. Whilst Kettering Emergency Department is recruiting new staff, we do use external agency nurses to help in the provision of safe care by Registered Nurses. I am sorry that on this occasion it led to the delay in discharge from the hospital.

Kind regards

Rebecca Norton ED Lead Nurse
