My sister attended A & E one Monday evening recently with seizures.
Her blood pressure was up high, the nurse assisting her, quickly sorted out a medic to examine her.
The medic advised a head scan to see what was going on.
One hour later a porter came down and put their head round her cubicle and said, ive been looking for you for a hour, why are you in minors dept when you should be in the majors area of A & E?
Apparently with the amount of seizures suffered, my sister should of been in the more serious areas. when I challenged what this porter had said, it was dismissed by nurses with a apology that the dept was so busy and had been overlooked, however on her return back from the scan, she was put in majors!
Throughout the evening, my sister was cared for by a agency nurse who was looking to get their time sheet signed, they even forgot to carry out a requested ecg test!
Finally a consultant came to see her, but complained that they had been waiting upstairs on the ward for the last two hours as this consultant had been expecting her on the ward, but no one in the A&E had made arrangements for her to go up on there!
Finally an examination took place, but sis was given a diagnosis not relevant to her having seizures and she was discharged next day. By the end of the week my sister was so ill she attended Portsmouth hospital. In there hands she was correctly diagnosed with epilepsy and given appropriate medication and wasn't allowed home until she was well enough.
Not good St Richards A&E. I know its height of summer and your full to capacity but the way my sister was treated and even misdiagnosed this wasn't good. We wont be complaining, just improve on a busy Monday night staffing.
"given a wrong diagnosis!"
