"Disgusting treatment"

About: Medway Maritime Hospital

My Son was admitted to the vascular ward and was treated as though he had a DVT which was later proved not to be the problem. No further tests were carried out to establish the cause of his symptoms, despite him being in pain.

When he first went to the ward was placed in a side room and was there for over 30 mins before any staff realized they had a patient there; consequently no obs carried out on arrival.

He asked for a coffee but was not given one and there was no water jug in his room all the time I was there. His wife had to ask for water. He was on the ward from 3.30pm and was not given a hot drink at all until the next day. Staff reckoned they were to busy and yet the hospital statistic show staffing levels at 101%.

He was put on a Heperin infusion and was supposed to have 6 hourly blood checks which would not have happened if he had not requested that it be done. On one occasion his named nurse failed to understand the written instruction and reduced the infusion far too much instead of reducing by .2 the nurse reduced to .2 which could have had serious repercussions to his health. It took my son querying it to his doctor before the mistake was rectified some time later.

I am glad I do not live in the catchment area and need never be hospitalised in the Medway Maritime. One more thing I noticed was that there was no hand sanitizer in his room so one could not be sure that the nurse has cleansed theirr hand since leaving a previous patient and before attending to my son.

This treatment, or lack of it, has caused no end of distress to his wife and family.

We are sorry to hear that the care your son received was not of the standard that you would expect. We would like to look into his individual concerns in more detail but require more information about him first. Could he please contact our PALS team between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday, by telephone on 01634 825004 or 01634 830000 x5793 or by email at Pals@medway.nhs.uk
