"ERCP proceedure 26/7/16"

Went into hospital with what I guess is the usual trepidation ahead of a procedure that involves you being awake with a tube down your throat...ugh!

Was guided through the initial health check, understanding, 2 gowns etc by a nurse.

They had a great manner and I felt I was in safe hands immediately. One of the anaesthetists also came to see me and they too were very reassuring. On way into theatre I had a cannula inserted in my arm, by which I was to be given anaesthetic. This was not straightforward as, being so dry, my veins were hard to find.

It was the surgeon them self who finally hit the right spot...after a number of near misses. At this time became very faint, due to being 'dry' through lack of fluids and was quickly laid back and given saline. I wasn't rushed and felt ok in a couple of minutes...during this time the surgeon came out of theatre to chat to me...which I appreciated.

Then went into theatre and was positioned appropriately...a little uncomfortable initially, but fine once I asked if the pillow could be removed so I could lay flat.

Found the mouthpiece a little disturbing initially, but I guess that the anaesthetic started to kick in then as I felt completely relaxed.

In all honesty I'm not sure if I was awake or asleep for the whole procedure but what I do know is that I felt no pain...not even the slightest bit of discomfort. I think I felt the endoscope being removed from my throat but that was it...all done...and me minus two large Gallstones!

I'd like to thank the surgeon and all their team for their kind attention and obvious skills...and of course the nurse, for looking after me initially.
