"After Care"

A week before I had Thyroid surgery as I am Type 2 Diabetic I was given instructions as to what medications not to take on the day of surgery...........I was also told to make sure I take all my regular medications with me to the hospital (the nurse at pre-admissions wrote down all my medication) On the admission day I was again asked what medication I was taking and it was noted that I am Type 2 Diabetic. I was told not to eat/drink anything other than a light breakfast before 7.00am as I would be going to theatre at 1.00pm. I arrived in due time (which was 11.00am) Where I was asked to sit with several other people after a lengthy wait I was taken by a nurse and asked to change into gown then back to another "holding" area where after another lengthy wait I was called by the anesthesiologist who again went through my medication with me then back to the "holding" area whereby it was another lengthy wait when we were told the admission area was now closing for the day and we would be taken to the ward to wait until we were collected for surgery. I was collected at 3.00pm by which time I had a headache from hell and was very thirsty (as being diabetic I am supposed to eat on a regular basis throughout the day) I also knew by then my BP would be high. After surgery Nobody spoke to me to tell how the operation had gone ie: all went well or there were small issues I was then taken to the ward where very nice nurse went to find me some food (fish and cold chips) for which I was grateful. Late that evening a nurse came to take my BP and Sugar levels which were dangerously high 24.3 ..........this is when I was told I better take my diabetic medication. Overall I am appalled at the way people are kept waiting in the "holding" area for hours on end and the lack of attention to patients medication. I do not think people who are diabetic should be made to go for such long periods without food or drink. I might also mention that I was not given the surgical stockings although this was marked as issued on the form cmpleted by the admission staff.
