"Tests every week or fortnight is driving me mad"

About: St Georges at Queen Mary's Hospital (London)

(as the patient),

On Warfarin indefinitely after two mechanical heartvalves fitted in 2005

My INR readings differ every time I visit my GP and even after all these years I have never been told why this should be! Tests every week or fortnight is driving me mad as I get older and have problems getting to and from the surgery

Is there a machine that I could be provided with at home enabling me to take my own blood tests and then get the results from the machine and adjust doses accordingly?

Thank you for your enquiry.

We have been told there are coagulation machines available. We would suggest you speak to your GP or if you are a patient of the Trust you could speak to the Anticoagulation Clinic Sisters at St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The switchboard number is 020 8672 1255. The Sisters will return calls when they are in the office but do spend their time in clinic with the patients. Please leave a clear message with your telephone number and you will be contacted.

Or make contact with the Patient Advice and Liaison Service who can look into this for you.

PALS is available on 020 8725 2453 or by email on pals@stgeorges.nhs.uk

Update posted by Rochester (the patient)

I am going to contact PALS on the number you gave me and see if I can arrange for a home coagulation machine for home use.

Many thanks for your advice and help, It has meant an awful lot to me. You have partially restored the faith of an 81 year old man that somebody cares.
