"outpatient department"

About: Southampton General Hospital

I was amazed to discover how far from the entrance the outpatient department was located.Luckily I am mobile but people had arrived at the department unhappy at the distance they had walked.Signposting to this department was inadequate and could have been improved if there had been information outside the elevators to inform patients on which floor different departments were located.Reception staff seemed uninterested, making little or no eye contact whilst staring at their PCs.One person was extremely rude when I was trying to locate outpatients stating "You are in the wrong place".I have lived in many places both in the UK and abroad and this was my first visit to this hospital and could not wait to leave!

We are so sorry that you experienced difficulty and unhelpfulnesss when you attended the hospital.

Our new main reception desk is located just within the main doors of the hospital to enable anyone to obtain information regarding location of clinics etc.

We also have location maps located on the walls as you progress into the hospitaland whenever possible guides are available to provide instructions and walk people to their destinations.

The hospital is large and so we recognise that some patients may have difficulty in walking to their clinics.

Patients who are unable to manage the distances can request staff at the reception desk contact the porters to attend with a wheelchair to transport them.

The Trust is also looking into the production of an App to assist people in navigating around the site.
