"Patient experience with sepsis"

About: Bassetlaw Hospital / Accident and emergency Bassetlaw Hospital / General medicine

(as a friend),

Admitted via a & e which was excellent from start to finish. So to the assessment ward for the first night and the onto the ward for a further 4 nights.

There seemed to be no handover between Atu and receiving ward. No meds given for 15 hrs and diabetic. No air conditioning and ward like a greenhouse and not enough fans for those with temp. No access to water machines on ward for visitors dehydrating. Why do you not have these? Meals not great for diabetic patients. Took ages on discharge for pharmacy to get drugs sorted which were handed in.

Thank you for providing feedback on your recent experience at Bassetlaw Hospital. Please accept my apologies for the delay in answering your concerns. Comments are usually responded to within two working days and I apologise that this was not the case following your feedback. I understand the family have raised their concerns with our Patient Experience Team who are investigating this matter on their behalf. I cannot answer some of your concerns due to patient confidentiality but these will be discussed with the family.

One of your concerns relates to the lack of air conditioning, unfortunately at Bassetlaw Hospital we do not have air conditioning on all of our wards, but there are fans available for patients. At times of high demand we have to prioritise the use of these as unfortunately there are not enough fans for each patient to have one individually. With regard to water fountains there are no water machines specifically for visitors but our staff always ensure our patients are hydrated and there are drinks machines and dining room facilities for visitors. All our patient meals are approved by Trust Dieticians to ensure all meals meet national guidelines and include a wide variety of meals to meet all dietary needs and preferences, including diabetes.

Once again, thank you for taking the time to feedback on your experience and my apologies again for the delay in responding.

Regards

Gill

Hi Gill

Thanks for you response to the issues raised. I appreciate you will liase with the family who confirmed in writing their own experience.

I would expect that water machines should be available for staff and patients to access as needed in communal areas or corridors. In my experience in public areas this is the case they don't have to be plumbed in as large bottles can facilitate this, to be changed when empty. Often staff are so busy they miss breaks and should be able to stay hydrated easily.

I appreciate shortage of fans, but when they have a high temp it is a necessary piece of equipment. Air con is a luxury, but as the climate changes and it may get warmer more often, perhaps future planning to start installing these will be money well spent
