"East Surrey Hospital"

About: East Surrey Hospital / Respiratory medicine

(as the patient),

Inpatient on Tilgate ward - staff were excellent, caring and compassionate nurses, can't fault the care received from cleaner to consultant

However

While I understand it is very hot outside, the temperatures on the ward were shocking. Patients lying topless in bed sweating and struggling to breathe as it was so muggy and stuffy (especially bad on respiratory). Staff were excellent providing cold drinks and opening windows, but I feel extremely sorry for them having to work at almost 30 degrees. I really think east Surrey need to stop with all the new building work and sort out air conditioning on the old wards, your poor staff and patients!

Dear Redhill5ah,

I'm very pleased to read about the care you saw on Tilgate Ward. All our staff work in sometimes difficult circumstances to do an excellent job providing care for our patients. Unfortunately on wards without air conditioning this means that some days can be quite hot but we make every effort to provide fans, drinks and other things to help.

Unfortunately retro-fitting air con is actually quite difficult and expensive and would require shutting the ward for some time. With current demand levels this would prove very difficult and is also part of the reason why there is building work going on. The works are all part of our plan to ensure that East Surrey Hospital is best placed to serve the needs of its patients. Both by modernising and updating but also by bringing new services into the hospital, such as radiotherapy.

Regards

Ian
