"Relative of Long Stay In Patient suffering..."

About: The Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust

I would like to start my review by stating that if it where not for the Walton Centre my partner would not be with us today. She was admitted with a brain abcess on February 26th 2016, she had emergency surgery that night and I would like to thank both the professor and the surgical team for basically saving her life, we owe you all so much gratitude. She then went onto the Horsley Critical care Unit, again I have so much praise for the Nursing Staff, the Doctors and Consultants, and specifically the professor, I just can’t fault the care she was given. On 18th march 2016 she was transferred to the HDU, then later that day onto Caton Ward. this transition was quick and unexpected, I was given no notice, but understand that someone else may be a priority. Whilst on Caton ward, the staff where again superb, the failings started to appear. She was weaned off being fed by a tube and was introduced to food, pretty disgusting food in the form of Microwave meals. You are not allowed to visit during meal time but on the odd occasion after dinner I went in to find her meal untouched, I have to say I would not eat it, it looked awful. This was the case throughout her stay. She didn’t eat anything substantial, and I may add that she didn’t eat what I brought in too, so no fault of the Walton Centre. She was doing fairly well with rehabilitation, she was sitting up for 7 hours a day under the guidance of physiotherapist X and Occupational therapist Y and was transferred to the Sid Watkins Building on 18th May 2016, I had high hopes that this was the road to recovery bit alas the failings got more acute. The food was still the same Microwave meals, I couldn’t take anything in for her as it was against protocol to reheat food, she lost weight like you would not believe and her moral hit rock bottom. The facilities are there but not available to relatives or indeed anyone but kitchen staff. Her mobility and indeed her mood has been helped enormously by Physiotherapists an yes Occupational Therapists, again I wish I could name them and I feel that given time this would be an enormous benefit, but alas today I have to sat, I think they have given up on her. I was told that she would be moved on, not clear when or where, but I have to say shame on you Walton centre, you are not the centre of excellence I thought you would be.

Once again I am thrown into uncertainty, like it has been ever since my partner was admitted, I feel you have let us down, not the staff, just the penny pinching Management that you never see. Your folder that is left in every patients room is a complete waste of time, supposed to be informative? I have been going for nearly 2 months and still don't know her team. I have filled it out for you, as best I can as I only find out things by asking. A change of policy is required, you have the staff but not the inkling to do it. This puts pressure on your front line staff who have to deal with us every day. Praise to the staff.

Thank you for taking the time to share your views on your partner’s hospital stay. We encourage feedback both positive and negative as it can help better our care and the experience patients have when they come into our hospital. A lot of time, effort and expertise goes into preparing our food and making sure patients dietary needs are met, so we’re very sorry to hear that you feel the food could have been better.

We’re also very sorry to hear you feel ‘let down’. Please get in touch and help us resolve some of the issues you have. If your partner is still a patient on a ward, you could have a conversation with the nurse in charge or the matron, or there is always our Patient Experience Team (call 0151 556 3090/3091) who are happy to help.
