"Welsh Paramedic Service"

About: Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust

(as a relative),

My Mum was seen by two fantastic paramedics last night who showed her dignified compassion. My Mum lives with dementia and following a fall we called 999. The response was quick.

The paramedics spoke gently to her offering reassurance and explaining what they were doing to help her up.

We wanted to avoid a possible hospital admission. They told me 'we are patient centred, we look at the whole situation and a good shift is where we can leave someone at home safely and well cared for. ' They checked Mum over. They asked us as her family questions that could help them understand her dementia and her home situation. And Mum stayed at home. No flashing lights, no waiting in A&E just being kept comfortable surrounded by love. Mum smiled and shook hands with the fantastic paramedics!

Thank you Suzy, it's always great to hear such positive stories and that your Mum and all the family had such a good experience. Your feedback has been widely shared with the staff involved and their manager. Their actions and behaviour and the positive impact they had on your family has been recognised with one of the paramedics being acknowledged in the 'Valuing Difference Award' at our staff awards. The Welsh Ambulance Service has made a commitment to support Dementia Friends and become a Dementia Friendly Organisation and I am delighted that so many staff have already participated in Dementia Awareness Sessions.
