"Excellent nursing care"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Day Surgery

(as the patient),

After getting a procedure done in the day surgery unit at Wishaw General, I had a lot of problems with my wound after the scar burst open after I had my stitches removed at Larkhall Health Institute.

When the wound burst I called the clinic and spoke to the nurse who had removed the stitches and she asked me to turn to the clinic. The nurse cleaned the wound and applied a temporary dressing but told me to contact the day surgery unit atWishaw General.

On contacting the day surgery unit to ask for advice I was fortuous in that my call was taken by TRACEY.

Not only did she immediately arrange a wound review with the surgeon who had done the procedure, she also asked me to attend the hospital where my wound was cleaned and a dressing applied and I was asked to attend my local clinic every two days to get the dressing changed up to the time I had to go for my wound review appointment.

Next or nine I received a call from Tracey to say that she had been thinking about me was not really happy with my wound and that she had spoken to a different surgeon regarding the wound and the surgeon wished to have a look at it. I was very reassured by this as the wound had been bleeding during the night.

Tracey told me to go to the outpatients depth and they would be expecting me. Sure enough, when I arrived I was shown into a room and after the wound was cleaned again one of the general surgeons (Mrs Langford? sorry I dont remember her name) came into the room, introduced herself and told me that my wound really needed to be restitched. Not sure if it was length of time since initial incision, because it had already been stitched or if I was just unfortunate but it seemed that the skin surrounding the wound was very fragile and kept ripping as she was trying to stitch it.

The surgeon finally had to stitch the inside of the wound and use paper stitches to hold it together. She then applied a dressing and told me to leave that in place and not to touch until my wound review appointment with plastic surgeon but she did give me a few dressings home with me incase I needed them as the situation of my wound was at my hairline which made it difficult for a dressing to stay on.

That night my wound bled and I changed the dressing in the morning and the following night it bled a but more and seemed to be seeping "gunk"

Again I was unsure how to proceed as I didn't know whether to put a dressing on and wait for wound review appointment or if waiting a few days would make matters worse.

Once again I called Tracey and she immediately asked me to come to hospital for the wound to be checked. Once again it was cleaned, swabs were taken and antibiotic ointment was applied. I was again asked to attend wound review with plastic surgeon next week as previously arranged.

At the moment, I still have the wound and it is still seeping and bleeding slightly but hopefully it will be sorted out at wound review appointment tomorrow.

The reason for me writing is that I wasn't to let you know what an asset Tracey is to your nursing team and I think she deserves recognition for going the extra mile with her concern and excellent nursing care. that she gave me. I wish all nurses worked to her high standards
