"Having a heart attack"

About: Cumberland Infirmary

On the 23rd June 2016 I was cycling with a friend near Buttermere in the Lake District when suddenly I developed chest pains. Unfortunately they was no phone signal but I managed to obtain a lift into Keswick, the people driving rang for an ambulance as soon as we could get a phone signal. An ambulance met me at the roadside near Keswick and transported me to the Cumberland Infirmary. The journey from Keswick to Carlisle seemed long but the ambulance personnel give me pain killers and reassurance and these are the first two people I would like to say thank you to. On arrival at the Cumberland Infirmary I was told that the consultant was on the way and within a few minutes I was being prepared for the procedure that would clear my blocked artery. The consultant arrived and quickly briefed me about what was going to happen, the procedure took place and I immediately began to feel better. On feeling better I was able to thank the consultant and the other members of their team. Up until seeing the consultant I was uncertain about what was happening to me, they informed me about what was happening to me, and what the team was going to do. I would like to thank the consultant and the team for what they did, although it was a difficult time their reassurance and caring manner, with a little bit of humour thrown in, made it seem less serious. After being given the ok I was take to the Coronary Care Unit where I spent the next four days. My time in the unit was made a good experience by the team of people who shared in my care, I would like to thank all of them. An example of the care I received was on the second night my wife, who was travelling form our home in Middlesbrough, was able to stay the night and a nurse went out of her way to obtain a reclining chair and bedding that made her stay more comfortable. The staff on the ward were always cheerful and keen to ensure that I was comfortable and aware of what was happening to me. I will forever be grateful.

I hope I have no reason to revisit the Cumberland Infirmary but if I ever find myself in a similar predicament I will take the an awareness that I will be in excellent hands and the outcome will be positive, once again thanks to everyone who took part in my care.

Thank you for getting in touch with us with such a positive review of your recent experience of the Cumberland Infirmary after sustaining a heart attack during your cycling trip to the Lake District.

I am very pleased to hear that you found the care and attention to be of such a high standard.

The team work very hard to ensure patients are comfortable and fully understand how anxious patient’s families can be, especially when distance to home is involved. It is pleasing to hear that you found the care and attention to be of such a high standard.

I will pass your comments to the Matron for the area as I am sure she will be delighted to share your feedback with the wider team.

I do hope that your health is continuing to improve.

Best wishes for the future.
